Estimation Issues Associated with Time-Series—Cross-Section Analysis in Criminology

چکیده
In this paper we offer a relatively comprehensive introduction to estimation issues associated with time-series— cross-section analysis in criminology. We divide the estimation issues into two categories: (1) those that have received a fair amount of attention in the literature and (2) those that have not. Issues that have received attention are heterogeneity, autocorrelation, panel heteroskedasticity, nonstationarity, and unit-specific trends. Issues that have not received much attention are spatial autocorrelation and contemporaneous correlation. Using county-level data from the state of California, focusing in particular on the crimes of assault, robbery, and burglary, we control for the first set of estimation problems, then we explore the effects of the latter set. We conclude that contemporaneous correlation deserves more attention than spatial autocorrelation. Also, we found that assault is more sensitive to the estimation issues raised than either robbery or burglary.

This paper employs a general non-linear analysis tool to analyse the nature of time series associated with the price (returns) of a particular company in Tehran Stock Exchange. It is shown that the behavior of the process associated with the price (returns) time-series of this company is weakly chaotic, and due to the non-random behavior of the process, short term prediction of stock price is p...

Through a series of research cruises conducted by the R/V Ferdows-1 to assess Myctophid resources, using a SIMRAD EK500 scientific echosounder carried out the Target Strength measurement of Benthosema pterotum in the Oman Sea. The principal method was based on a direct in-situ split-beam measurement technique, which is implemented in the EK500 system. For real-time observations ,the target st...

متن کاملTIME-SERIES–CROSS-SECTION DATA: What Have We Learned in the Past Few Years?
■ Abstract This article treats the analysis of “time-series–cross-section” (TSCS) data, which has become popular in the empirical analysis of comparative politics and international relations (IR). Such data consist of repeated observations on a series of fixed (nonsampled) units, where the units are of interest in themselves. An example of TSCS data is the post–World War II annual observations ...

T AlTe examine some issues in the estimation of time-series cross-section models, calling into 1/11 \ question the conclusions of many published studies, particularly in thefield of comparative T v political economy. We show that the generalized least squares approach of Parks produces standard errors that lead to extreme overconfidence, often underestimating variability by 50% or more. We also...
